Sabbath, October 01, 2010 - "Refiner's Fire part 2"
“Our pride, selfishness, evil passions, and
love of worldly pleasure must all be overcome; therefore God sends us
afflictions to test and prove us, and show us that these evils exist in our
characters.” God’s Amazing Grace 89
1. Life
of Job –
Job 2:9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity?
curse God, and die.
“From the depths of
discouragement and despondency Job rose to the heights of implicit trust in the
mercy and the saving power of God. Triumphantly he declared: "Though He
slay me, yet will I trust in Him."”
{My Life today 328.5}
2.
Abraham –
Hbr 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was
tried, offered up Isaac:
“If Abraham and Sarah had waited in confiding
faith for the fulfillment of the promise that they should have a son, much
unhappiness would have been avoided. They believed that it would be just as God
had promised, but could not believe that Sarah, in her old age, would have a
son. Sarah suggested a plan whereby she thought the promise of God could be
fulfilled. She entreated Abraham to take Hagar as his wife. In this they both
lacked faith, and a perfect trust in the power of God. By hearkening to the
voice of Sarah, and taking Hagar as his wife, Abraham failed
to endure the test of his faith in God's unlimited power, and brought upon
himself, and upon Sarah, much unhappiness. The Lord intended
to prove the firm faith and reliance of Abraham upon the promises he had made
him.” {1SP 95.2}

Church in the Wilderness
“We
would present before you the difficulties through which the church in the
wilderness passed. They did not have faith, and when they were tested, they
murmured and rebelled. They were stubborn. RH, October
3, 1893
“The
unbelief and murmurings of the children of Israel illustrate the people of God
now upon the earth. Many look back to them, and marvel at their unbelief
and continual murmurings, after the Lord had done so much for them, in giving
them repeated evidences of his love and care for them. They think that they
should not have proved thus ungrateful. But some who thus think, murmur and
repine at things of less consequence. They do not know themselves. God
frequently proves them, and tries their faith in small things; and they do not
endure the trial any better than did ancient Israel.” {1SP
223.1}
“God's children are always being tested in the furnace of affliction. If
they endure the first trial, it is not necessary for them to pass through a
similar ordeal the second time; but if they fail, the trial is brought
to them again and again, each time being still more trying and severe. Thus
opportunity after opportunity is placed before them of gaining the victory and
proving themselves true to God. But if they continue to manifest rebellion, God
is compelled at last to remove His Spirit and light from them.” {4BC 1146.7}
4.
Moses –
“Here Moses sinned. He became wearied with the continual murmurings of
the people against him, and at the commandment of the Lord, took the rod, and,
instead of speaking to the rock, as God commanded him, he smote it with the rod
twice, after saying, "Must we fetch you water out of this rock?" He
here spoke unadvisedly with his lips. He did not say, God will now show you
another evidence of His power and bring you water out of this rock. He did not
ascribe the power and glory to God for causing water to again flow from the
flinty rock, and therefore did not magnify Him before the people. For this
failure on the part of Moses, God would not permit him to lead the people to
the Promised Land.” {SR 165.3}
5.
Solomon –
“His love of women was his sin. This passion he did not control in his manhood, and it proved a snare to him. He took many wives, some of whom were daughters of heathen kings; and they led him into idolatry. In his youth, wisdom had been more precious to him than the golden wedge of Ophir. But, alas! lustful passions gained the victory. He was deceived and ruined by women. What a lesson is here taught! What a demonstration of the need of strength from God to the very last! It is not safe to permit the least departure from strict integrity. “ {CTBH 128}
6. Joseph –
Genesis 39:7-9 “And it came to pass
after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she
said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, ... how
then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
“Joseph's faith and integrity were to be tested by fiery trials. His
master's wife endeavored to entice the young man to transgress the law of
God... Joseph's answer reveals the power of religious principle. He would not
betray the confidence of his master on earth, and, whatever the consequences,
he would be true to his Master in heaven.”
{CC 75.4}
7.
Pharaoh –
“The Lord told Moses that the signs and wonders which
he should show before Pharaoh would harden his heart, because he would not
receive them, and God would multiply his signs. Every punishment which the king
rejected would bring the next chastisement more close and severe, until the
proud heart of the king would be humbled, and he should
acknowledge the Maker of the heavens and the earth as the living and
all-powerful God.” {1SP 183.1}
8. Daniel -
Daniel 1:8
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with
the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he
requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.“
“The food appointed them would include meats pronounced unclean by the law
of Moses. They requested the officer who had them in charge to give them a more
simple fare; but he hesitated, fearing that such rigid abstinence as they
proposed would affect their personal appearance unfavorably, and bring himself
into disfavor with the king. Daniel pleaded for a ten days' trial. This was
granted; and at the expiration of that time these youth were found to be far
more healthy in appearance than were those who had partaken of the king's
dainties. Hence the simple "pulse and water" which they at first
requested, was thereafter the food of Daniel and his companions.” {CTBH 26.2}
“Everyday life brings its perplexities, trials, and discouragements. It is the humble work which frequently draws upon the patience and the fortitude. Self-reliance and resolution will be necessary to meet and conquer all difficulties. Secure the Lord to stand with you, in every place to be your consolation and comfort. A meek and quiet spirit you much need, and without it you cannot have happiness. May God help you, my sister, to seek meekness and righteousness. It is the Spirit of God that you need. If you are willing to be anything or nothing. God will help and strengthen and bless you. But if you neglect the little duties you will never be entrusted with greater.” {3T 81.1}
Eph 5:27 “That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such
thing; but that it should be holy and without
blemish.”
