Relief workers expect that almost a million Ethiopians may die this year alone in what could become "the worst human disaster in recent history." After ten years of drought and civil war, twelve of the country's 14 provinces have been laid waste by a famine of biblical proportions. More than 40% of the country's 42 million people are malnourished, and 2.2 million have left their homes to wander in search of food.

Once again the world may see those sickening images: skeletal children too weak to swat away the flies that swarm around their eyes; old people slumped against herding sticks, too weary to take another step.

"I heard the man say in an ordering sound... something about a car," Kelly Doyle said. "I heard my mother scream. I heard a big bang." Prosecutors said the second slamming door was the sound of Tyler closing the car's trunk on Doyle, whom he allegedly forced into the trunk and ordered to remain quiet, but shot her in the head after she screamed. Kelly Doyle said she "went back to her room, put her headset back on and lay down". A short time later, she again got up and found her father, William Doyle, on the telephone with police, reporting that his wife was missing. William Doyle, another daughter and a son also had been asleep.

Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are
investigating an explosion at a Danville, Illinois, church during Sunday
morning services that injured 33 people. About 300 people were in the church
when the blast tore a hole in the side of the First Assembly of God Church.
Danville Police spokesman Larry Thomason said the blast occurred about 10:40 a.m. CDT against a wall outside the church. Police do not know the cause of the explosion yet, but ATF agents are helping in the investigation, he said.

An explosion killed one person in a garage in Danville, Illinois, on Thursday,
four days after a bomb exploded at a church in the eastern Illinois city,
injuring 33 people. A senior law enforcement official told CNN the explosion
occurred at the residence of a figure wanted for questioning in the church
bombing, just as police were knocking at the person's door. The explosion

The Justice Department does not plan to challenge Oregon's assisted-suicide

3 SUSPECTS ARRAIGNED IN 'RACIAL' KILLING

Three white men, two of them parolees, were charged with murder on Tuesday in the "racially motivated" killing of a black man who was beaten and dragged by a truck -- his injuries so severe he was decapitated. Two of the suspects have racist tattoos and authorities said they were investigating a possible link to white supremacist groups. POLICE: PARENTS PUT INFANT'S BODY IN BATTERY ACID

A Chicago couple has been charged with killing their 16-month-old daughter,
then putting her remains in a pot of battery acid and hiding her body parts
that did not disintegrate. The crime is so heinous even police are calling it
one of the most "horrific" they've ever come across. "No one can recall parents inflicting such horrific, unspeakable acts on their child," one policeman said. Joan Tribblet, 27, and Everett Johnson, 29, were charged with first-degree murder and concealing homicide in the December murder.

Scientists, however, say it is too early to determine if a counter effect, La Nina, is on the way. CLINTON ADMINISTRATION PLANS TO CREATE HEALTH DATABASE

A health care proposal from the Clinton Administration that would track

Delaware brothers aged 8 and 9 have been arrested for the rape of a
9-year-old girl, police said Tuesday. Another 9-year-old girl, who
allegedly helped the boys hold the victim down, was arrested last
week. All three have been charged with rape and kidnaping. Wilmington
police described it as the only sexual assault case on record to
involve suspects so young. The case followed another in Chicago
earlier this month in which to boys aged 7 and 8 were charged with
the murder of an 11-year-old girl. Police believe they could be the
youngest murder suspects in U.S. history. In the Delaware case, the
two boys were taken into custody this week concerning the July 9

videotape Sunday of euthanasia advocate Dr. Jack Kevorkian giving a
lethal injection to a patient suffering from a terminal disease.

assisting the suicides of as many as 130 people, but said this was
the first time he inserted the needles and killed a patient himself.
